It’s finally starting to feel like fall in Houston with the temperatures falling under 80 degrees! The last quarter of the year, Q4 as us accountants say, is my favorite time of year. We have three major holidays month-after-month: Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas/New Years.
This year looks a little different. We aren’t able to enjoy the outdoors as much as we normally would, but I still have a bucket list of things to do this year.
1. Set-up Halloween decorations (this year we’re doing a Halloween village).
Halloween is arguably the most important holiday of the year in our household. We usually have a Halloween party with our family and friends but due to COVID this year, we’ve opted for a smaller get-together (think murder mystery meets escape room). While we can’t have a huge costume-filled celebration, we will absolutely still be decorating for the season and including the newest addition to the fam: Halloween Christmas village!
2. Visit the new Eastern Glades at Memorial Park.
I keep seeing people visit this new section of Memorial Park and I can completely understand why. Houston has a ton of green space but this new addition is welcome. Since we’ve been staying mostly indoors, any excuse to get out of the house (with Gordo of course) is welcome.
3. Carve pumpkins!
Another staple of our Halloween decorations, which has become a tradition, is to carve pumpkins with friends and family the night before our Halloween party. We fill our entry walkway with carved pumpkins and tombstones!
4. Wear all the sweaters and scarves (aka me hoping for cold weather).
Some people have a thing for shoes and bags. Me? I have a thing for sweaters and scarves. I’m talking I will wear and sweater and scarf if it gets below 80 degrees to (1) stay warm and (2) wear my faves. So obviously waiting for the perfect weather to fully transition my wardrobe to fall y’all.
5. Go on a Getaway.
EH-VER-REE-ONE is making a trip to these Getaways*. Apparently, these two guys started the company in Boston and finally expanded to Texas! Imagine a small studio apartment but in the middle of the woods. I booked the three of us (me, Drew, and Gords) a trip in November for some unplugged R&R.
* This is my referral code for $25 off your next visit.
6. Bike our way around Houston.
At the start of quarantine, I got a new bike (thanks to my bike snob of a husband). Now that the weather is much more bearable, I want to ride our bikes more. Last weekend we biked from our house to 19th Street two days in a row!
7. Watch Halloween movies.
Another tradition in our house is to watch allllll the Halloween movies. My preference is more Disney-esque movies (i.e. Hocus Pocus, Halloweentown, Haunted Mansion, etc), while Drew prefers the classics (ie. Halloween, Beetlejuice, Fright Night, etc).
8. Make s’mores in our backyard.
We got a firepit last year as part of our Backyard Oasis transformation but have only used it a few times because it’s been too hot! I’m hoping this year we get to the 70s or below so we can enjoy an evening of roasting.
9. Fall cleaning!
I didn’t get to this during the Spring so I’m pushing for this to get done in the fall. Being stuck at home and staring at all of the stuff we’ve collected has made me want to The Home Edit and Marie Kondo the *ish* out of our house.
Happy fall everyone!
